A State-Federal Partnership Program

>> Research & Monitoring

The Reserve's research sector supports and conducts high quality research and monitoring with a focus on NOAA's mission to protect, restore, and manage use of coastal and ocean resources through an ecosystem approach to management. The research and monitoring sector is staffed by a research coordinator, a natural resources/research specialist, a marine research specialist, and a research intern.

Research Sector Goals

The goals of the research sector are: to conduct and provide opportunities for original research in coastal and estuarine systems; to track changes in the Reserve and within the Narragansett Bay estuary to help forecast environmental quality and trends; to protect Narragansett Bay by encouraging and assisting partners in research, monitoring, and science-based ecosystem management; and to provide managers, scientists, and educators with scientific and technical information that fosters research, education, stewardship, and informed decision making.

Research and Monitoring Programs

Examples of research and monitoring projects include on-going water quality monitoring in Narragansett Bay as part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System Wide Monitoring Program, collaborations with partners to conduct coastal and estuarine research and monitoring throughout Narragansett Bay, the recruitment and support of visiting researchers, and sharing research and monitoring results through publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, conference posters, public presentations and more.

Reseach Publications

The research sector has been busy characterizing the ecological conditions of the Reserve and Narragansett Bay. A detailed account of habitat types, wildlife, and plant communities has been compiled into a comprehensive Narragansett Bay Research Reserve Site Profile. When this document is ready, we will post a link to it here.

Links to other research and monitoring publications are coming soon.
Visiting Researchers
For those interested in using the Reserve's resources such as the lab and residential facilities for research, please review the document available here and then contact Kenny Raposa, Reseach Coordinator, 401-683-7849 for additional information.
Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF)
The National Estuarine Research Reserve System's Graduate Research Fellowship provides master's degree students and Ph.D. candidates with an opportunity to conduct research of local and national significance that focuses on enhancing coastal zone management. Application guidelines are available here.

Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology

The Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology (CICEET) was established jointly between NOAA and the University of New Hampshire for the purpose of funding research that develops and applies new technologies and techniques in the estuarine environment at the 27 NERR sites.
Since1998, over $3 million from the CICEET program has funded at least 14 diverse research projects at the Reserve. Information on each funded CICEET project and more about the CICEET program can be found at http://ciceet.unh.edu/
